Tip: if your layout needs support wire, poles, or hooks, include those in the plan before buying the light strand.

What to buy with your estimate

Your length estimate helps you avoid buying a strand that is too short or awkwardly oversized. Before ordering, check whether the lights are outdoor-rated, shatter-resistant, connectable, and compatible with your outlet location.

How to measure before buying

  • Measure the actual anchor path. Product photos make strands look longer than they are.
  • Add room for swag. Cafe-style lights need extra length because they hang in soft arcs instead of straight lines.
  • Plan the outlet side first. A perfect light strand is annoying if the plug lands on the wrong side of the patio.
  • Check connectable limits. Some strands can connect together, but only up to the manufacturer’s listed maximum.
  • Use support wire for longer spans. Long unsupported runs can sag, pull, or fail in wind.
