What to buy with your shelf plan

Your spacing is only useful if the shelves can safely hold the items you want to display. Check the weight rating, mounting hardware, wall anchors, and whether the shelf needs studs.

Spacing rules that prevent ugly shelves

  • Leave breathing room. Most shelves look better with 10-16 inches of clear vertical space unless you are only displaying small art.
  • Plan the tallest object first. Measure your coffee maker, books, plants, jars, or collectibles before picking the gap.
  • Mind the top shelf. If the top shelf gets too close to the ceiling, it feels cramped and becomes hard to style.
  • Use studs when possible. Heavy books, ceramics, glass, and plant setups need stronger mounting than light art ledges.
  • Add lighting after spacing. LED strips or puck lights need room for cords, controllers, and clean cable hiding.
