Calculating…
How to use this pergola lighting estimate
- Perimeter layouts are cleaner and cheaper when you only want a glowing outline.
- Zig-zag canopies feel more magical, but they need more anchors and more total length.
- Parallel rows work well under larger pergolas when you want even light over seating or dining.
- Post wraps need extra length fast. Measure the post height and decide how tight the spiral should be before buying.
What to buy with your estimate
Look for outdoor-rated, shatter-resistant string lights with enough total length for your layout. If the run is long, check whether the strands are connectable and whether the manufacturer limits how many sets can be linked.
Most pergola installs also need cup hooks, screw hooks, zip ties, guide wire, outlet planning, and sometimes poles or anchors if the structure does not have enough attachment points.

Pergola lighting FAQ
How many feet of string lights do I need for a pergola?
For a simple perimeter, add the length of all four sides plus outlet distance and a small buffer. For zig-zag or canopy layouts, expect more length because the lights cross the roof area multiple times.
What bulb spacing works best?
Wide bulb spacing feels relaxed and cafe-like. Closer spacing creates brighter task lighting, but can look busy on a small pergola.
Do I need guide wire?
Use guide wire when the strand is heavy, crosses open spans, or needs a clean sag line. Do not rely on thin electrical cord alone for long unsupported runs.
