Outdoor Rug Size Calculator

Use this outdoor rug size calculator to choose a patio rug that actually fits your seating area, dining set, balcony, or lounge layout before you buy.

Quick rule: a patio rug should either anchor the front legs of your furniture or fit the full seating/dining zone with enough room to pull chairs back.

How to use the outdoor rug estimate

For seating areas

Choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs. If the rug is too small, the patio looks chopped up instead of finished.

For dining sets

Add about 24 inches around each side of the table so chairs can slide back without catching on the rug edge.

For balconies

Leave a small border of visible flooring so the rug does not curl against rails, drains, or door thresholds.

Common outdoor rug sizes

  • 5×7: small balcony, compact bistro set, or accent layer.
  • 6×9: small seating zone or two-chair patio setup.
  • 8×10: most standard conversation sets and small dining layouts.
  • 9×12: larger lounge zone, sectional, or 6-person dining set.
  • 10×14: large patio, pergola lounge, or full outdoor room feel.

Before you buy

Check whether the rug is truly outdoor-rated, washable, UV-resistant, and safe for the surface underneath. On decks and covered patios, also check drying speed and whether you need a breathable rug pad.
